House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of Calif., flanked by House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer of Md., left, and House Assistant Minority Leader James Clyburn of S.C., speaks about the Affordable Care Act, Wednesday, July 11, 2012, on Capitol Hill in Washington.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-California) denounced efforts by House Republicans to repeal the Affordable Care Act, as the chamber prepared to vote for the 33rd time Wednesday, calling them futile and a waste of time for the nation whose primary concern should be focused on how to get the economy back on track.
"As I've said before, the politics be damned," she said at a press conference held at the Capitol. "We know that job creation is the most important thing right now. … Let's stop this legislation-to-nowhere. Let's get working on initiatives for job creation."
“With millions still out of work, Republicans are focused on holding us up,” said House Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland), who suggested the vote to repeal would never materialize. “6.6 million young people will be dropped from their parents' plans if this repeal gets passed, which we won’t let happen.”
Emily Schlicting, who battles an auto-immune disease and spoke at the press conference, told Campus Progress that young Americans like her will benefit from the Supreme Court's historic decision to uphold President Barack Obama's health care overhaul thanks to the under-26 provision and the pre-existing conditions clauses of the historic legislation.
"I think the Affordable Care Act helps to prevent young people from being gutted financially if you have a major medical incident," she said. "Also, if you have a preexisting condition, you are now covered," Schlicting continued. "We now are protected from the things that young people think they're impervious to."
Although the Republican-controlled House passed a measure to repeal the law. Democrats say the measure has no chance of passing the Senate.
