Lawmaker: Girl Scouts Are ‘Pro-Abortion’ Group Run By ‘Communists’ And ‘Lesbians’

Girl Scout cookies are pretty popular—that’s why 200 million boxes [PDF] of Thin Mints, Samoas, and the like are sold each year. But according to one Indiana lawmaker, the troop members are tools of radical Communist group that wants young girls to explore their sexuality, support abortion, and be indoctrinated by liberals who won’t let them sing Christmas carols.
Indiana state Rep. Bob D. Morris (R-Fort Wayne) said as much in a letter to his colleagues over the weekend about why he would not vote for a resolution honoring the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts of America—and why he was taking his own daughters out of their local Girl Scout troop.
“A Girl Scouts of America training program last year used the Planned Parenthood sex education pamphlet ‘Happy, Healthy, and Hot,’ ” Morris claimed in the letter, continuing:
The pamphlet instructs young girls not to think of sex as ‘just about vaginal or anal intercourse.’ ‘There is no right or wrong way to have sex. Just have fun, explore and be yourself!’ it states. Although individual Girl Scout troops are not forced to follow this curriculum, many do. Liberal progressive troop-leaders will indoctrinate the girls in their troop according to the principles of Planned Parenthood, making Bishop Conley's warning true.
Morris went on to claim the Girl Scouts are ruled by “feminists, lesbians, or Communists,” promoting homosexual lifestyles, and that they are no longer allowed to sing Christmas carols. He reportedly found this out from “a small amount of web-based research.”
But none of this is true, Girl Scouts leaders said weeks ago.
The Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michigan have had to distribute literature dispelling rumors that they have any position on abortion or sexuality. The pamphlet [PDF] addresses a number of rumors, such as whether they took the word “God” out of the Girl Scout Promise, where the money for their famous cookies goes, and their relationship with a number of groups.
“The fact that the Honorary President of Girl Scouts of America is Michelle Obama,” Morris wrote, “and the Obama's are radically pro-abortion and vigorously support the agenda of Planned Parenthood, should give each of us reason to pause before our individual or collective endorsement of the organization.”
But why did the Girl Scouts already have information ready about these rumors?
Slate reported back in September that conservative Christian groups were spreading rumors about the Girl Scouts and their supposed “radical feminist lesbian agenda.”
The rumors have been pushed by the Family Research Council, the National Review, Concerned Women of America, and the far right website WorldNetDaily.
This all began to get picked up and swirled around through social media a few weeks ago.
“Misinformation is passing as fact,” Diane Tipton, president of the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital, said in January. “The Girl Scout organization does not take a position on abortion or birth control, and these topics are not part of the Girl Scout program or our materials. We believe these matters are best discussed by girls with their families.”
Morris is the only member of the Indiana House not to support the resolution honoring the organization’s centennial.
Despite even the Indiana House Speaker, a fellow Republican, denouncing the critique of the Girl Scouts, Morris said he stands by his letter.
“My family and I took a view and we're sticking by it,” Morris said Tuesday, adding that his daughters will be joining an alternative group for young girls run by conservative Christians.
