Oppose Bush’s Attack on Contraception and Abortion
The Bush administration’s Department of Health and Human Services is proposing a regulation that threatens women’s access to reproductive health services and information, including some of the most commonly used forms of birth control. The proposal deliberately confuses the definitions of contraception and abortion and could seriously jeopardize laws that protect women’s access to reproductive health services. If the regulation goes into effect it will enable individual doctors, nurses, and other health care providers to refuse to perform any health care service they deem morally objectionable, and could prevent hospitals from providing emergency contraception to sexual assault survivors.
Act now! Tell your members of Congress and Health and Human Services Secretary Leavitt that you oppose this attack on women’s health. Click here.
Feel the heat? Lobby at home!
You know that person in D.C. that you elect every two years to make decisions for you? They are back in town for the summer to listen to your concerns, and if you don’t show up, you can be sure that a bunch of wackos talking about oil drilling will. This is our chance to let our representatives know that we will be holding their feet to the fire about the global climate crisis, and won’t let go until bold action is taken. 1Sky, one of our climate partner organizations, is organizing hundreds of other people across the country to deliver this message: create 5 million green jobs by 2015, freeze climate pollution levels and cut pollution at least 80% by 2050, stop the creation of new coal plants that emit global warming pollution, and invest in renewable energy solutions. If you’ve never visited your Congressional office or held a visibility event before, don’t worry: 1Sky provides you with all the resources you’ll need and works with you to choose the best tactics to deliver your message most effectively in your district. Urge Your Senators to Support Veterans Rights
The Department of Veterans Affairs has recently forbidden the establishment of voter registration drives in hospitals, rehab centers, and other places of care. This decision bars thousands of young veterans, many of whom have been injured while fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, from registering to vote. It is unjust to ban them from participating in an act that defines the our democracy so essentially. The Senate has recently introduced a bill to overturn this ban and thus allow voter registration drives at Veterans Affairs hospitals. To send a message to your senator, urging him or her to support the Veterans Voting Support Act, click here.
Tell state officials: "Protect my right to vote!"
Sign the petition right now urging your secretary of state to fight burdensome requirements for voters to produce specific, government-issued IDs in order to vote. Although some claim that these requirements are necessary to prevent voter fraud, very few cases of fraud have ever been documented. What is clear is that voter ID laws disenfranchise students, the elderly, low-income, and others who are less likely to have the required form of identification. Your secretary of state can help stop legislative attacks on voting rights. Take action now!
Protect Academic Freedom
There is a right-wing movement that has introduced legislation in thirty states that would curtail the exchange of ideas between faculty and students. These groups believe that ideas like feminism and fields like peace studies are too controversial for “impressionable” college students. Join Campus Progress as we work with the Free Exchange on Campus coalition to protect the critical dialogue between and among students and faculty that makes higher education what it is. You can help by signing up as a Free Exchange supporter, or by organizing an event on your campus.
Sign the Youth Climate Pledge!
With Power Vote, a non-partisan campaign spearheaded by Energy Action Coalition, we will build a youth voting block 1 million strong to elevate the issue of climate change, hold our elected representatives accountable, and we work together on our campuses and in our communities to usher in a clean and just energy revolution.
