Campus Progress Student Reps

As a Student Representative, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Have a guaranteed place at the summer 2007 Campus Progress National Student Conference (last year we received thousands of requests for the 600 seats we had)
  • Receive advance notification of exclusive Campus Progress and Center for American Progress opportunities, such as film screenings, contests, grant opportunities, conference calls, and live chats on CampusProgress.org
  • Host Campus Progress speaking events
  • Network with Campus Progress speakers, staff and special guests
  • Connect with policy and communications experts at Campus Progress and the Center for American Progress
  • Set up Campus Progress meet-ups and informal informational sessions
  • Start a Campus Progress group for your campus on thefacebook.com and other websites
  • Table for Campus Progress at concerts and other events (Campus Progress sent students to table and attend shows on the Foo Fighters / Weezer national concert tour last fall)
  • Network with Campus Progress Student Representatives from across the country
  • Identify and help keep us informed of important issues, campaigns, and developments on your campus
  • Develop public speaking, media, policy, and organizing skills
  • Participate in a rapidly growing national progressive movement and work with the Center for American Progress and Campus Progress to make your voice heard on your campus and across the country

Over the past year, Campus Progress has grown from an idea into a major player in the effort to turn the tide in this country and start winning the battle of ideas on campus, on issues from the economy to the environment, Iraq to privacy to tuition, debt, and student aid. But we still have a lot of work to do, and we can’t do it without your help. Our Campus Progress Student Representatives will play a critical role in our ability to spread the message and advance our work with young people all over the country.

Meet our 2005-2006 Student Reps:

 

Adam Axler

Adam is a sophomore majoring in Political Science and Community Health at Brown University. He is an academic peer advisor and a member of the Brown Sailing Team. His policy interests include health care reform, fiscally responsible economic policy, and sexuality education, and he has interned for SEICUS.

 

Jessica Braun

Jessica is a junior majoring in Public Policy and Constitutional Law at Anoka Ramsey Community College. She is active with student affairs and activities on campus and serves as the President of Student Government. Currently, Jessica is an intern in the Minnesota House of Representatives working on same-sex civil unions and marriage issues.

Justin Costa

Justin is a senior at Wesleyan University. He is a policy intern with USAction and has been involved in Darfur activism through a STAND chapter on campus. Previously, he has worked with the Student Campaign for Child Survival and Americans for Democratic Action, and his is interested in civil, consumer, and worker rights.

 

Alexander Cumana

Alexander is a freshman majoring in International Relations at Florida International University. He is pledging the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, which hosts social and philanthropic events, and he is particularly interested in Latin American affairs and health care reform.

Nick Daggers

Nick is a junior majoring in Politics & Government and History at Illinois State University. He serves as an On-Campus Senator for the ISU Student Government, and his policy interests are mainly domestic, including education, civil rights, national security, and environmental issues.

 

Albert Fang

Albert is a junior majoring in Political Science and History at University of California at Berkeley. He is the UC Berkeley Chapter President of the Roosevelt Institution and a former intern at the Gender Equity Resource Center. His interests include education policy, sustainable development, and race and immigration policy.

Lee Fang

Lee is a sophomore majoring in Government and Politics at the University of Maryland at College Park. He is very active in politics on campus and has organized student fundraisers for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. He is interested in equal rights, minimum wage, and universal health care policy issues.

 

Ted Fertik

Ted is a junior majoring in History at Yale University. He is the President of Students for Clean Elections and the Director of Development of the Roosevelt Institution at Yale. He is working on bringing organizing and campaign expertise to his community through New Haven Action, which is currently signing up local households for the Connecticut Clean Energy Alternative.

Andrew Fong

Andrew is a junior majoring in Government at Harvard University. He is organizing the Harvard chapter of the Roosevelt Institution and serves as the Finance and Logistics Officer for the Harvard Political Union. He is interested in identity and racial politics, religion and values, foreign and military policy, and the perfect burrito.

 

Ethan Forrest

Ethan is a junior majoring in Religious Studies at the College of William and Mary. He is an Editor and original staff member for the William and Mary Progressive, a liberal political magazine, and he volunteers with community organization, including the Rita Welsh Adult Skills Center and the READ Program. Since Hurricane Katrina, he has become particularly interested in social justice issues, prompting him to organize a campus benefit concert to raise money for the Red Cross.

 

Daniel Getman

Daniel is a senior majoring in Political Science at The George Washington University. He serves as the Political Director to the President of the GW Student Association and the DC Coordinator for the New Leaders Council, wherein he works with students from American, Howard, GW, and Georgetown on advocacy projects. He would like to see progressives wise up on foreign policy and mobilize more college students to vote.

Chad Golston

Chad is a freshman majoring in Political Science at the University of Arkansas. He is a leader in Generation DFA and is particularly interested in civil liberties issues and finding a powerful voice for progressives.

 

Kathryn Hannah

Kathryn is a senior majoring in Philosophy, Political Science, and Economics at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the student director of UPenn’s Fox Leadership Speaker’s Committee and a tutor on campus. Kathryn is planning on writing an undergraduate thesis on foreign policy and conflict resolution.

 

Whitney Haring-Smith

Whitney is a junior majoring in Political Science at Yale University. He is the Executive Director and Founder of New Haven Action and an Urban Fellow at the Dwight Hall Center for Public Service and Social Justice. He has worked on national security issues at the United Nations and the Department of Defense and also locally for the mayor of New Haven.

 

Katherine Hayes

Katherine is a graduate student studying Government and Philosophy at Claremont McKenna College. She writes for The Portside, a liberal magazine, and is a member of both Student Government and the Gay-Straight Alliance. Her policy interests lie in women’s issues, abortion rights, environmental issues, the Supreme Court, and poverty.

Todd Hill

Todd is a sophomore at North Lake College, majoring in Political Science. He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and writes political commentary for the North Lake News Register. He is passionate about outreach and issue campaigns, in particular, focusing national security, foreign policy, civil liberties, and education.

Cory Kalanick

Cory is a junior majoring in Political Science and History at Boston University. He is a representative to the BU Student Union and is active in numerous debate societies, including the BU Debate Society and the American Parliamentary Debate Association. He is interested in mobilizing youth around progressive political causes and increasing civic education in public schools.

 

Gregory Kaplan

Gregory is a freshman majoring in Political Science and Economics at the University of Pennsylvania. His greatest policy interest lies in education reform; he is very concerned about crowded classrooms and poverty in inner city schools in particular and believes we should invest more heavily in future generations. Gregory was elected Inspector of Elections for his ward in Philadelphia, as well as Vice President of his class at UPenn.

 

Jennifer Lantz

Jennifer is a junior majoring in Political Science and Environmental Science at Northern Kentucky University. She is a member of Environmentally Concerned Organization of Students (ECOS) and has lobbied Congress for over five years on environmental issues, particularly ANWR. She believes that ensuring a healthy environment by cleaning up industry pollution and establishing alternative energy supplies is a prerequisite to building a progressive future.

 

 

Jeff Leanna

Jeff is a graduate student studying Public Administration in Non-Profit Management at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He is the National Vice President for Students and Youth has served a in various positions advocating GLBT rights. His other policy interests include health care coverage, HIV/AIDS, national security, and nuclear proliferation.

 

Danielle Lee

Danielle is a senior majoring in Government and Chemistry at Smith College. She is the Treasurer for the Student Government Association, the Secretary and Publicity Co-Chair for the Union of Underrepresented Scientists, and a member of Air Force ROTC. She is interested in Social Security and health care issues and also passionate about a woman’s right to choose.

 

Rebecca Littman

Rebecca is a sophomore majoring in Government and Psychology at Wesleyan University. She helped found the Wesleyan chapter of STAND and the Progressive Student Alliance. She was also involved with the Wesleyan Tsunami Relief Campaign, which raised money for a grassroots organization in Indonesia. Policy issues that are of greatest concern to her are human rights and foreign aid.

Nate Loewentheil

Nate is a junior majoring in Ethics, Politics, and Economics at Yale University. He is the Development Director and an original founding member of the Roosevelt Institution. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Yale Entrepreneurial Society, which promotes entrepreneurship on campus and runs a $50,000 business plan every year. In addition, he co-directs The Elmseed Enterprise Fund, a student-run nonprofit microcredit lending organization, which works with low-income people in New Haven to help them start their own small businesses and revitalize the city.

 

Emily McDermott

Emily is a junior majoring in International Studies at American University. She is a coordinator for the Progressive Network and a member of Darfur Action and the Women’s Initiative at AU. She is most interested in poverty, community action, and education issues, especially in inner cities.

Carter McNeese

Carter is a junior studying History and Political Science at Warren Wilson College. He is interested in helping progressives find their voice in conservative communities and campuses and is most interested in labor issues and how faith applies to politics.

 

Jonathan Mendelson

Jonathan is a senior majoring in Political Science at Carnegie Mellon University. He writes political editor ials for The Tartan, CMU’s student newspaper, on such issues as electronic voting, redistricting, and public transit ,and is a former committee chair for the Student Senate. He is most interested in economic, health care, education, and government and electoral reform issues.

Elaine Meyer

Elaine is a senior majoring in History at Northwestern University. She is a Programming Committee member for Block Cinema, an on-campus cinema, and a Representative of Chi Omega to the Pan-Hellenic Judicial Board at NU. She serves as a conversation partner on the Community Council for International Students and is most interested in health care, youth crime, and foreign policy issues.

Robert Patillo

Robert is a senior majoring in Political Science at Clark Atlanta University. He is the President of the Political Science Association, V.P. of the Pre-Law Society, Treasurer of Kappa Kappa Psi, and a member of Toastmasters at CAU. He is particularly interested in worker’s rights, economic equity, and freedom of speech on college campuses.

 

 

Casey Rose

Casey is a sophomore majoring in Political Science at The George Washington University. Casey is a Senator in the Student Association and a member of both the Roosevelt Institution and GW Democracy for America. She is most interested in environmental and student loan issues.

Eric Samuels

Eric is a senior majoring in Political Science, International Studies, and Sociology at Ohio State University. He is the Secretary of the Student Government and helps run The Pragmatist, a progressive campus publication. He was founder and president of the OSU Chapter of the ACLU and now serves as Secretary for the Delta Tau Delta fraternity.

 

Victoria Sanick

Victoria is a sophomore majoring in Political Science and Communications at Mount Wachusett Community College and Fitchburg State College. She is the chapter chair of MassPIRG at MWCC and is working on a campaign to clean up the Nashua River. She is most interested in promoting energy efficiency and the reduction of global warming.

Clinton Schaff

Clinton is a graduate student studying Communications Management at the University of Southern California. He is particularly interested in issues related to equality, access, and funding for higher education and is looking to get involved with student publications and labor groups at USC.

 

Jackie Schumacher

Jackie is a senior majoring in International Studies at the University of California, Irvine. She is involved in both Student Government and Greek life and has performed research with a political science professor on campus. She interned in Washington, DC in the summer of 2005 and is particularly interested in environmental and women’s issues.

 

A.J. Singletary

A.J. is a sophomore majoring in Environmental Studies and Dance at Washington University. A.J. is an Executive Director of the Roosevelt Institution, active in GLBT alliances on campus, and founder of Pathways, an inner-city college application initiative. A.J. is interested in working on policy issues concerning the environment, gender and sexuality, health policy, and international diplomacy.

 

Nate Thames

Nate is a senior majoring in Political Science at the University of Kansas. He is on the Student Advisory Board for the Spencer Museum of Art and the KU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and is most interested in working on issues related to energy policy, gay rights, gender issues, and health care.

Stacy Tolos

Stacy is a junior majoring in Human and Organizational Development and Sociology at Vanderbilt University. She is a Student Director for Idealist.org’s 2006 National Conference and an Ingram Scholar, for which she received a full scholarship for commitment to positive social change. She is interested in engaging in and fostering dialogue between progressive and conservative students on campus.

Jess Tweedy

Jess is a senior majoring in Public Health, Environmental Organizing, and Public Policy at The Evergreen State College. Jess is a Campaign Coordinator for Sustainable Campus Energy for WashPIRG and an Assistant Business Manager for The Cooper Point Journal, a student newspaper. Additionally, Jess serves as the student coordinator for Evergreen’s Student Advocacy Center, and she is interested in promoting sustainable energy policies to counter global warming.

 

Jordan Usdan

Jordan is a law student at Georgetown University. Jordan is on the board of the American Constitution Society at Georgetown ; works for the Journal of Law and Public Policy; has pledged to do pro-bono work as a practicing attorney; and is interested in court appointments, international affairs, drug policy, and Social Security.

 

Patrick Vassel

Patrick is a junior majoring in Political Science at the University of Notre Dame. He is the Director of Programming for the Student Union Board, a guest reporter for The Observer, a student newspaper, and an active member of ND Theatre. He is interested in a wide variety of policy issues, but his focus lies in international law, foreign policy, trade, and human rights.

Saint-Julia Vilnet

Saint-Julia is a sophomore majoring in Political Science and English Professional/Technical Writing at the University of South Florida. She is a Senator on Student Government and a member of the Ambassador Committee for the Black Student Union. Her main policy interests are civil rights, international affairs, and homeland security.

 

Jessica Ward

Jessica is a sophomore majoring in Political Science and Public Relations at Oklahoma State University. She is a Greek Life Senator on Student Government, a member of Amnesty International, and a staff writer for the Daily O’Collegian. She is particularly interested in labor, sex education, and religious issues.
